Where the Buffalo roam

Jets cut down by Sabres

Buffalo Sabres (4) vs Winnipeg Jets (2).......
The Sabres visited Winterpeg in hopes of extending their two game win streak and catching Carolina for the eighth and final playoff spot in the East. The Jets not mathematically eliminate yet but their tee-off time all but set, hope to climb out of their four game losing skid.
Tomas Plekanec (29th) struck first for Buffalo at 7:42 of the opening period on the powerplay as "Little Joe" Pavelski set him up beautifully in the right face off circle and he lifted a snap shot over Pekke Rinne in net for Winnipeg. Rick Nash doubled the Sabres lead with his 28th less than ninety seconds later while the teams were back at full strength as Nash wristed a shot through a screen and past Rinne. The period ended with the Sabres holding a 12-9 shot advantage.
In the second Buffalo struck again with the extra man as d-man Victor Bartley notched his 4th of the year at 12:52, Nash and Plekanec both getting their second point of the night with assists. Winnipeg finally got on the board at 14:55 as Patrik Elias deflected a Andrej Meszaros' slapper over the shoulder of Roberto Luongo. After forty minutes the Sabres led 26-22 in shots.
"Jumbo" Joe Thornton (25th) got the Jets within one at 13:49 of the third as he beat David Desharnais clean off a face-off at the left of Luongo and caught the goalie off guard with a quick snap shot that found it's way through the legs of the tender. David Desharnais (24th) would make up for his earlier gaffe in the face-off circle as he took a Pavelski feed and beat Rinne low stick for the eventual winner at 15:14 of the third. The shots after sixty minutes were 30 apiece.

MOLSON'S 3 STARS:
1 - Patrik Elias (Wpg).......... 1 goal, 1 assist, with a team high 8 SOG.
2 - Tomas Plekanec (Buf).... 1 goal, 1 assist, -1 and 3 SOG
3 - Victor Bartley (Buf)......... 1 goal, 1 assist

What's the goal?

Scoring down in the WCHL

Fans of the WCHL unite!

The WCHL has a reasonably long history, with many ups and downs, but its been an interesting story, and quite allot fans have come to love the league for this very reason. As mentioned earlier in this season, the "fun" has been scaled back in the league, at least as far as the Games played goes. lets take a look.

Like every league, rules are changed and tweaked to provide for the best possible experience for the fan when he shells out the big bucks for Tickets to a game. That customer now expects to be entertained. Goalie pads may be reduced in size to provide more scoring, or the centreline taken out of the picture to provide for longer and more exciting stretch passes out of the defensive zone, are some such changes. The WCHL now faces a dilemma (in our opinion). The game has become too stale. Much like the days of the NHL Devils, or later on the Wild, the trap brought down the excitement of the game, and the lack of goal scoring in the WCHL make leagues like the NHL look far more preferable.

This year saw a sharp dive in our scoring, and in high flying games pretty much all together. A record number of games have gone to OT and much more often than not, to the shootout. On average, each team has had 15 shootout game so far this year, plus another 6 OT games per team means more than 25% of WCHL games go to OT or beyond. This is actually consistent with the NHL as well (as of 2013) though slightly higher. This is a bright spot for the excitement factor, but back to the lack of goal scoring.

The NHL provided us with about 3370 goals to watch in 2013-2014, from the mundane empty netter, to the through the legs short side Hertl style (since he was the last one to show it off so incredibly, We personally like Pavel Bure's version of it better). 1230 games played, and 2.74 goals per game. The best of the offensive teams, the Hawks, notched no less than 267 goals, followed closely by the Ducks with 266. The WCHL however, is lucky to have their top team breach the 200 goal mark. In fact, there is likely to be only 7 or so teams that will have a chance at 200+ goals, whereas the NHL sports 26 of 30 teams breaching the 200 goal barrier, and of the teams that didn't hit it, 3 were within 3-4 goals. This is a goal differential of about 25-30% between the two.

Perhaps the shrinking of goalie pads is warranted, or perhaps we need to clamp down on interference to allow fleet of foot skaters to break out more often, or at least draw a penalty if held up. There are many a suggestion that could be made, and we encourage discussion on the topic if its an issue. The Fans of the WCHL deserve more, they pay cash money to see an electric product, and we are not currently delivering the most exhilarating version of the WCHL that we can.

We chalk it up to a learning experience, one that we know how to correct, the question is, will we?

Of course we will.

Blue feeling in Columbus

Kings crown Jackets

Columbus Blue Jackets (3) vs Los Angeles Kings (4) - SO.........
Columbus visited "Tinsel Town" in hope of two points to help secure a playoff berth in the tough Eastern Conference. The Kings were just hoping to shake their two game losing streak and right their ship leading into the playoffs.
It was the 'Jackets that jumped out to an early lead, in fact Columbus scored three in the first to take a huge lead, thanks to goals by Jarret Stoll (15th) as he snapped a shot past Sergei Bobrovsky at 3:05, just 1:33 after that Jason Spezza scored his 13th as he deposited a Cory Conacher shot that had missed the net and bounced right to him at the side of the net. Jussi Jokinen (15th) at 14:07 made it 3-0 after twenty minutes and the fans in the Thunderdome were considering making it an early night as the Kings hadn't given them much to cheer about as they were out-shot 13-4.
Brian Flynn (8th) got L.A on the board at 12:14 on the powerplay as he blew a slapper past the out-stretched hand of Michael Leighton in net for Columbus. It took almost two full period but the Kings gave their faithful something to cling to as they outshot the Jackets 16-6 in the middle period.
Columbus would take back to back late third period penalties and the Kings would capitalize on both chances, making it 3 for 3 on the night with the extra attacker, goals by David Legwand (10th) 17:33 and Blake Wheeler (19th) with just seven seconds remaining in the game sent it into extra time.
Nothing was settled in overtime so off to the shoot-out, where Mikko Koivu scored for LA and completed the improbable comeback as he skated in on Bobrovsky and went backhand-forehand, between the legs and left Bobs out on no man's land.
The Kings fans gave the team a 10 minute standing ovation and were heard to be chanting "Wayne who" as they exited.
MOLSON'S 3 STARS:
1 - Jason Spezza (Clb)......... 1 goal, 1 assist, +2
2 - David Legwand (LA )........ 1 goal, 1 assist
3 - Jussi Jokinen (Clb)........... 1 goal, +2

Team wrap around: Calgary Flames

The Flaming C

Those darn Flames.....

Yeah I think we have all said it at one time or another, those annoying Flames are always in the mix, regardless of their scoring prowess, defensive touch, or solidity in the net. In fact, since we (here at ANAHQ) have been watching the Flames, they have more consistently outperformed their paper stats than any other team. We have a term for a team like that, Lucky.... or it could be good leadership.... nah we'll go with Lucky.

Many teams come an go in the WCHL, most are very easy to predict a placement for in the standings year in and year out (until this year). The Flames have beaten back that idea for many a season however. Almost always an "outside looking in team" on paper, they have single handedly redefined what it takes to put together a "Moneyball" squad. Having said that, the Flames actually have the best "on paper" team we here at ANAHQ can recall, but for most of the season, that has mattered very little.

Now the Flames get their due. Much as the Ducks got theirs a few seasons back...(and are struggling now) sporting a great team, yet still coming in near last in the West (or they were). The Flames have little to grumble about for the many years atop the standings they have enjoyed.... and in fact, should be appreciative for having those years.

Leading the Flames, is the newcomer Claude Giroux whom GM Cham stole away for a song and a promise. Granting the Flames a stellar season so far with 33-25-58, Mr. Giroux has had the lime light all to himself, and lets be honest, he was the  only guy on the team who remembered how to play hockey, that is until Stamkos woke up recently and joined in with 18-33-51. It has sparked the Flames a little, and since we started writing this article they have progressed from bottom feeder to being only 2 points out of 8th spot in the West.

Stamkos is definitely having a poor season (for him), with a colossal 18 goals in 69 games, making him one of the worst scorers (of those that are considered true scorers) in the league for season 19. Calgary cannot stop the blame there however, they must extend it to guys like Mike Fisher, whom while playing for Detroit, had an OK year, and since coming to Calgary, seems to have caught the Flounder flu, for which there is no known cure. This has resulted in 12 points in 34 games (with CAL) for the illustrious Fish.

Lets face it, after a terrible start to the season, the Flames find themselves below the line with 13 games to go, but since recent events have seen them improve their record immensely, you might even call it a hot streak. I suppose we should know better than to count CGY down and out, even if there is only a handful of contests left.

In Net CGY has actually had good luck despite their lack of scoring (until recently). Cory Schneider has managed a fairly consistent game and now has a decent record of .927 S% along with a GAA of 1.97, both of which put him in the top 10 in the league. Since S% and GAA are really the only stats that mean anything for a goalie (IOP), we would say he is having a good year.

This article started out with a completely different tone, at the time the Flames were last in the West, and looking pretty miserable, but since then, they have had a very good run and are looking like a playoff team if all continues. As long as their top scorers can bring the magic night in and night out, they will be one of the upset teams come round one, though few can be upset about it if we know its coming.

We have yet to touch on the defense, with good reason really, they have been abysmal in Calgary. Andrew Ference has been less then advertised with his offensive out put. With a whopping 8 points in 69 games, Ference has only his +/- to be proud of. On the brighter side, Justin Shultz has managed 23 points in the same span, playing along side Ference. We suspect the improved team play is transferring to the defense too and by seasons end their numbers will probably look a bit more respectable.

Calgary has had a rough year, but recent events have shown they are never to be counted out. With their tear upwards through the standings in the last 10 games, we can see them taking on the Blues, Oilers or even the Wild come the post season. Whichever team draws them, they would be best to take the matchup very seriously indeed. We predict the Flames are going to get in, and win round one, led by the renewed energy Stamkos seems to have, and the consistency of their tender along with Claude "can do no wrong"Giroux. Calgary is teaching us again this year, never underestimate this group or their ability to pull through in the end. Will it be their year to win a cup? they have the talent technically, but its the heart that will make the difference, and that has been lacking for them most of this season.

Blackhawks Up

Chicago blows away Oilers in Windy City win

Edmonton Oilers (0) vs Chicago Blackhawks (4) .......
Leading the Western Conference the Edmonton Oilers went into Chicago expecting to pad their two game win streak but the 'Hawks were less than gracious hosts.
The first period saw Edmonton get just two shots on net while Chicago would get eight but the game remained scoreless through one.
Edmonton took three of the first four penalties of the second period and the Blackhawks took full advantage going three for three and taking a 3-0 lead thanks to their powerplay. Brad Boyes, Troy Brower and Dan Boyle were all in on the first two, Brad Boyes (23rd) at 2:23 with a wrister, Brower (25th) at 11:51 on a slapper. A minute and thirty-four seconds after Brower made it 2-0 Nik Antropov (19th) got in on the fun as he scored on a slapper at 13:25 for Chicago's third powerplay tally of the period. Troy Brower would strike a second time at 15:50 as Dennis Wideman caught him with a perfect pass as he stepped out of the penalty box and Brower snapped a shot over the shoulder of Ilya Bryzgalov. Rookie John Gibson would come in and replace "Breezy" in the Oilers goal right after the fourth goal. The shots after 40 minutes were 17-13 'Hawks.
The third was a scrappy one with Chicago being tagged with 11 minutes in penalties and Edmonton receiving 7 but there was no further scoring. The Oil would fire twelve more shots at Jaroslav Halak in the third but the Czech would hold the fort and register his second shut-out of the season.
MOLSON'S 3 STARS:
1 - Jarolslav Halak (Chi)...... Halak stopped 25 shots in the game
2 - Troy Brouwer (Chi)......... scored twice and added an assist, one of his best offensive outtings on the season.
3 - Nik Antropov (Chi)......... one goal and one assist while having five shots on net in the game.

Pittsburgh goes Duck hunting

Penguins prove to be the better bird in 3-1 win

Pittsburgh Penguins (3) vs Anaheim Ducks (1)......
Saturday night saw two the battle of two birds of different feathers, both in fowl moods. Pittsburgh was mired in a three game slide that has seen them be overtaken for second in the conference by Ottawa. Meanwhile the defending champion Ducks have won three of their past four games but are a shadow of their former self.
The first period was like watching an egg hatch as there was no scoring or penalties through twenty minutes, the Pens holding a slight 7-6 shot advantage.
Anaheim gave the home faithful something to cheer about as Matt Moulson scored his 18th of the season at 8:02 as he deflected a Sheldon Souray slapper over the shoulder of Pens back up tender Joey MacDonald. Then Duck's defenseman Jake Gardiner took an ill-advised hooking penalty at 12:57 and Pittsburgh would make him pay thirty-six seconds later on the powerplay as Patrick Kane scored his 26th of the year as he grabbed the loose rebound in the crease and beat Tuukka Rask. Then the unthinkable happened, on Jake Gardiner's next shift during a scuffle in the Pens crease he apparently bumped into referee Dan O'Halloren and started discussing his last penalty, O'Halloren having heard enough ejected Gardiner for the game thus putting Pittsburgh on a five minute major powerplay. Pittsburgh would score two times with the extra man to go up 3-1 on goals by, Alexander Radulov (10th) at 15:54 and Dan Hamhuis (4th) at 16:12. Tuukka Rask was pulled after the third goal and Eddie Lack took over. The Pens held a 18-12 shot edge after 40 minutes.
The third was much like the first with no scoring and just three minor penalties handed out. Pittsburgh was content to sit back in their defensive shell and protect their two goal lead, only registering two shots on Lack, as he stopped both. Final shots in the game were 20-18 Pens.
MOLSON'S 3 STARS:
1 - Dan Hamhuis (Pit).......... had a goal and an assist on the night
2 - Joey MacDonald (Pit)..... stopped 17 of 18 shots on the night to get his seventh win in thirteen starts
3 - Sidney Crosby (Pit)......... the kid was alright tonight handing out two helpers.

Team wrap around: St. Louis Blues

Blues just can't get close enough...yet

Welcome to another issue of "who do we choose". This time around we will review the St. Louis Blues and their bump laden rise to the top of the WCHL's Western conference.

The Blues have had a rough couple years in the WCHL, from hovering 2 points out of a playoff spot last year, to hovering 4 points over the line the year before to eek their way into a playoff spot. It's that uncertainty that gets to the fans, the players and the GM alike when you just don't have enough juice to really make it, but you feel your so close.

This year something clicked, or perhaps something snapped? On paper the Blues were not supposed to lead their division, let alone their conference, but paper alone does not a team make. It's like "reverse year" in the WCHL, with teams like Calgary and Nashville, (who in our opinions are the two teams who seem to be able to take a lesser product on paper and make it perform on ice like a real contender) sitting at the bottom of their conference, both looking to miss the big dance. This year that magic has shifted, and the beneficiaries are teams like the Blues, and perhaps the Oilers as well. But we digress, back to the BLUES.

Shifting up and down the top 3 spots for most of the year, the Blues can thank their incredible success to a couple really solid guys who have come out of their shell this year, starting with Damien Brunner. Leading the Blues with 13-26-39 in 53 games he is in no small part an example of  bang for your buck considering his cheap price tag, and yet his GM hasn't resigned him, hoping perhaps to clean up come Free Agency. Another key asset is Ales Hemsky, a guy who keeps a bag packed in waiting for the next trade that sees his butt get on a bus and head out of town. Hemsky has found a home, and more surprisingly a solid two way game that has helped the Blues by both netting 33 points, and maintaining a +5 on a team where half of the guys are in the negative. While Brunner has peaked playing the top center, Hemsky is doing it from the 2nd line, a less illustrious spot, but one he seems to thrive in.

We couldn't round out the forwards without mentioning the fact that the Blues are able to maintain that top spot in the west even though their BEST forward is and has been injured for 20 games of their campaign. Despite his injury, Rich Peverly is still 2nd in scoring, and is the only player to maintain over 1 PPG. Peverly is wanting to rejoin his team soon, as his sprained ankle is healing up nicely. It could have been worse we suppose, but the Blues surely need him back in the saddle and producing again to keep up their pace. Peverly has 11-24-35 in 32 games this year, far from a slouch.

That's enough of those well and talented forwards that have collectively proved once again the truth in the expression " the whole is greater than the sum of its parts" Lets move onto the Defense, or rather "The Bieksa". Just missing the top 10 by a single point, Bieksa is the damaging force that every team underlines to their players in the pregame strategy sessions. His numbers kinda of speak for themselves, 183 PIM to come in at 2nd in the league. Add to that 136 hits coming in at 4th, and 24 points on the year and you clearly have "Powerhouse" that every team needs to plan for. Joining Bieksa is Marc Staal, but he kind of pales in comparison with only 17 points on the year and a very poor -10 rating. So we will let that dead horse lie.

The Blues put together something special it seems. Not every GM has an eye for it, and it tends to change from year to year, but have no doubt this year is the year of the underdog, with teams like Edmonton and Ottawa, the Blues and Columbus staking their ground in playoff territory, and bumping from grace some perennial favorites like Calgary and Nashville. Make no mistake, this is a VERY different year for the WCHL, up is down and left is right, and I'm sure we can all agree, while annoying to the dynasty teams, its a breath of fresh air. Whatever buttons are being pushed behind the scenes to adapt, change and tweak the way the WCHL runs, they are spreading the wealth, and taking the obviously talented teams down a notch... except maybe those pesky New York Rangers.

The last part of the Blues tetris puzzle is of course the netminder Nicklas Backstrom. He gets pelted each and every game and now has 1444 shots against in only 54 games. His stats may not look outstanding, but when you take in to account what a workhorse he needs to be when backstopping this team, his silver lining gets a little brighter. Backstrom is probably in his twilight years, so this may well be his last kick at the championship can, and we think he is taking it quite serious. 31 wins in 54 games, speaks volumes for a season like the WCHL is currently having. Even Lundy only has 33.

The Blues on paper don't look like a contender, but much like the flames don't look like a bottom dweller, paper means nothing this year, and the Blues now have more chance than most (based on their actions) to bring home some hardware and shut the critics up for awhile.

Go BLUES!!!!
