Saturday Night Special

Predatory feast on the Island

It was one goal to few for the Islanders, who lost to the Predators 6-5 in a shootout
Nashville Predators (6) vs New York Islanders (5) - SO.......
The Preds hit the ice hungry in the first against the Isles and were rewarded with two quick goals by Evander Kane. Kane registered his 15th and 16th tally of the year in the span of ninety seconds early in the period thanks in part to two helpers by Ryan Kesler, the first goal on the powerplay. Michael Del Zotto (6th) cut the Nashville lead to one at the 9:23 mark as he hammered home a slapper from the point. Artem Anisimov (19th) restored the two goal lead just sixteen seconds later as he snapped a shot over the shoulder of a screened Carey Price. That's the way the period would end with the Isles ahead 12-10 in shots.
The Islanders came out on fire in the second with new found enthusiasm as they scored quick and often. When all was said and done they had scored three times to take a 4-3 lead, as Phil Kessel would get his 42nd and 43rd goal of the year five and a half minutes apart early on. Bryan Little (15th) would close out the period as he won a face off in the defensive zone then received a pass from TJ Oshie as he flew done the wing and hammered a slapshot through the legs of Jonathan Quick. Despite being out-shot 11-8 in the period the Isles found themselves leading after 40.
Nashville was down by a goal to start the third but they were the team that came out like they wanted the win. Artem Anisimov scored his second goal on the night at 3:35 and then Dion Phanuef (23rd) while short-handed would pick up a loose puck after teammate Henrik Zetterberg was flattened in front of the Islanders net and snuck a back hander through Price to regain the lead. That was short lived as Kessel would cap off his hat-trick on the same powerplay just six seconds later, sending the game into extra time. When nothing was settled in OT it was time for the shoot-out. Ryan Kesler and Evander Kane scored for Nashville in the shoot-out and Jonathan Quick stymied Isles Phil Kessel and Niklas Backstrom's attempts.
Quick stopped 28 shots for his 16th victory and Carey Price allowed 5 goals on 27 shots in regulation and overtime.

Saturday Night Special

Duck hunting season

It's going to be a nasty season series for the Ducks and Avalanche

Anaheim Ducks (6) vs Colorado Avalanche (4) .......
A lot of verbal jabs were bounced back and forth between the two respective GMs well before this game was played on the ice but when it was it didn't disappoint.
The game remained scoreless until the 14:22 mark of the opening frame when the Ducks would count two goals inside of a minute off the sticks of Derek Stepan (29th) and Patrice Bergeron (24th), Bergeron's on the powerplay with Av's Brenden Dillon off for slashing. Then it was Colorado's turn with the extra attacker, in fact the Avs would score consecutive powerplay goals 1:21 apart to close out the period as Lubomir Visnovsky ripped a slapper through Rask, his 6th of the season, then John Carlson notched his 4th of the season as he deposited a rebound off the boards over Rask's shoulder as Victor Hedman watched helplessly from the sin bin with a second remaining.
After a fast, hectic first period that saw 4 goals (3 on powerplay), there was just a single goal in the middle frame, it came off the stick of Patrice Bergeron (his second of the night, both on the powerplay) again the culprit, Brenden Dillon who was sitting two minutes for hooking. Still a close game at 3-2 Ducks, with the shots 22-17 after forty.
Down by one Colorado came out quick and with purpose as they wanted to let the Ducks they wouldn't go away without a fight. Dustin Penner with just his second of the season at (5:00) and defenseman Justin Faulk (11th) just thirty-four seconds later with the extra skater as Bret Clark looked on nervously from the penalty box. With that goal the Avs took their first lead of the game which last just under six minutes before Anaheim rattled off three straight goals in four minutes and four seconds, starting with Logan Couture's 24th on the powerplay with the Av's Dillon again the player in the box. Matt Moulson (33rd) put the Ducks back in the lead, this time for good as Rick Nash with his 32nd would count as the insurance marker at 15:25 and the Avs wouldn't get the equalizer despite out-shooting the Ducks in the third 17-10 and overall 34-32. Tuukka Rask made 30 saves for his 30th win of the season in the victory while at the other end Craig Anderson made 26 saves in losing for just the 3rd time this season.

2 - Matt Moulson (Ana)........... 1 goal, 2 assists, +2, 2 shots

The Avalanche may have a leg up on Anaheim on their re-match as they are off until the Ducks come to town on Tuesday. Then it's off to Music City USA to take on the Predators on Wednesday, then it's back home to host the Coyotes on Friday. The Coyotes sit in 11th in the West, playing .500 hockey in their last ten games.

Saturday Night Special

Capital Punishment

There was plenty to celebrate for Washington Saturday night, as they scored a 5-3 win over the Philadelphia Flyers.

Philadelphia Flyers (3) vs Washington Capitals (5).......
The Flyers went into Washington hoping to deliver some not so brotherly love but it was Washington who grounded the Flyers as they Capitalized three times with the extra man on seven chances.
Washington opened the scoring on the powerplay as Brent Burns scored the first of his three (18,19,20) on the night at the 5:51 mark. Brandon Saad (14) would pull the Flyers even just over a minute later but Mike Green would fire a slapper from the blueline that Crawford never saw through the traffic. The period would end that way as the Flyers out shot Washington 14-7 but trailer 2-1.
Ryan Getzlaf scored his 16th of the season to open the scoring in the second on the powerplay but two goals in a span of sixty-eight seconds, both with the extra skater put Washington up by a pair. Jason Garrison would cut that lead in half with his 11th of the year with just 1:21 remaining in the middle frame.
The Caps lead by one through the first seventeen minutes of the third as they would fire eleven shots at Corey Crawford. Brent Burns with his hat-trick goal at the 17:00 mark however would be the proverbial "nail in the coffin" as the Flyers were concerned. The Caps would skate off with a 5-3 decision.
Mike Smith made 24 saves to win his 22nd game of the season, while at the other end, Crawford stopped 30 pucks and saw his record fall to 11-10-2.
MOLSON'S 3 STARS:
1 - Brent Burns (Was)........ 3 goals, 1 assist, 5 shots.
2 - Mike Green (Was)......... 1 goal, 2 assists, +1, 5 shots
